Trump’s Ceasefire, Israel’s Defiance, and the Risk to Global Security
President Trump recently brokered a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran, only to see it shattered within hours—largely, he says, by Israeli aggression. Trump expressed deep frustration, stating plainly: “Israel, do not drop those bombs.” His call for restraint reflects a growing rift in his base, especially among “America First” conservatives alarmed by Israel’s efforts to drag the U.S. into another war.As Trita Parsi of the Quincy Institute explains, this conflict was not about nuclear threats, but Israeli efforts to maintain military dominance in the region. Israel’s actions—bombing Iran unprovoked and ignoring U.S. calls for de-escalation—mirror its pattern in Gaza and Lebanon: demand unilateral ceasefires while continuing its own offensives.
Worse, two nuclear-armed states—the U.S. and Israel—attacked a non-nuclear country, Iran, while it was engaged in negotiations. This undermines the global Non-Proliferation Treaty and sends a dangerous message: only nuclear-armed nations are safe from attack. Such precedents may encourage other states—Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and beyond—to pursue nuclear weapons.
Trump’s ceasefire attempt was genuine, but sabotaged by a reckless Israeli government led by Netanyahu, who many believe is provoking war to distract from corruption charges. It’s time the U.S. stop enabling this behavior and reconsider its military support for a government undermining peace and global security.
