The troop surge in Iraq has coincided with a corresponding surge in White House propaganda. What a stunning coincidence that General Petraeus’s testimony should commence on September 11, clearly a desperate effort to link the Iraq invasion to Al Qaeda as astutely observed by Senator Robert Byrd. Regrettably, General Petraeus is yet another hired gun willing to parrot the White House propaganda party line.
This is the man, who in 2001, repeated the administration’s bogus claim of WMD biological labs in Iraq which paved the way for our disastrous invasion. Largely ignored is the far more credible GAO report which announced that only 3 of 18 of the so- called benchmarks have been met. In a stunning revelation of White House collusion, Comedy Central’s, Jon Stewart compared Petraeus’s sober testimony with verbatim passages of Bush’s past speeches. Then in a moment of mock irony, Bush announced his intention to follow through on Petraeus’s recommendations. We must increase the pressure on our lawmakers to bring the troops home now. Failure to do so will send more of our soldiers and Iraqi civilians to their death. I implore readers to break their long silence and demand an immediate end to this senseless and immoral war.
