Trump, a Clear & Present danger 5-24-2019

24, May 2019               Trump, a Clear & Present danger

The President acting the role of “bad cop” warned North Korea with nuclear destruction, boasting about “a fury like the world has never seen”. Excited by the possibility of being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, if he could reach a peace accord, the President abruptly changed his role to “good cop,” claiming he and the North Korean leader were “in love” but sadly Kim Jong-un rebuffed his advances.

He soon lost interest in North Korea and turned his attention to Iran, threatening with them with complete annihilation. Are we to witness another failed military adventure another “shock and awe, “Iranian Freedom” with botched intelligence to justify military actions resulting in the death of millions of innocent civilians – just to appease Iran’s enemies, Israel and Saudi Arabia?

Threatening “the end of Iran” from his Twitter Pulpit implied that President was seriously considering using nuclear weapons. Was this pure theater, Trump acting the tough guy assuming a John Wayne swagger to impress his base? Fortunately, the Iranians have been far more diplomatic in their responses.

In any event what is particularly disturbing is the erratic and incendiary nature of the President’s rhetoric. We have squandered close to $6t on failed military adventures.

The President’s wild mood swings exacerbated by the possibility of further revelations of his tax records makes him a clear and present danger to the US and the world at large. The deafening silence of the Republicans only amplifies the danger.

Prime Minister Modi 5-20-2019

20, May 2019                         Prime Minister Modi

India’s current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's, leadership has been has been a major disappointment. Following his landslide victory in 2014 he received a powerful mandate by the people to jump start the sluggish economy and bring back civility. He promised to create millions of new jobs and tame high inflation. The twin promises of good and honest governance and economic reforms have fallen flat despite receiving a big boost from low oil prices. Unemployment has risen offering grist to the opposition Congress Party. Efforts to transform India to “make India great” have failed.

His get tough “John Wayne” persona sending warplanes to bomb Pakistan was extremely reckless inflaming the separatist insurgency rather than tamping it down. Furthermore, his actions brutally repressing moderate Kashmiris inflamed anti-Indian sentiments. His impetuous behavior under the false notion of being decisive more closely resembles that of President Trump. In 2016, on a whim he abruptly withdrew most Indian banknotes in an effort to combat “black money.” The plan failed causing enormous pain and suffering to India’s vulnerable population, famers and small businesses. Much like the US, the rich and well-connected use tax shelters and skilled lawyers to hide their “loot” while the little guys are squeezed from their hard earnings.

What is even more frightening is Modi’s war on press freedom. Seldom do journalists criticize “dear leader" lest they invoke the fury of the state to punish and imprison them on bogus charges. An army of tax collectors make life a living hell for political opponents. State universities are packed with ideologies and the army has been effectively neutered from politics.

Nothing has been done to discourage India’s massive birth rate resulting in 10-12 million people entering the workforce every year.

Modi’s armies of obedient followers, members of the RSS, do his bidding responding to his repeated efforts to stoke Hindu-Muslim anger. He chose a fiery Hindu cleric as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state who has intensified hostility towards the Muslim minority with the slogan “the election campaign is a battle of two faiths.” He called Muslim migrants from neighboring Bangladesh “termites” and warmly welcomed Hindus mimicking Rwanda’s Hutus demonizing Tutsis as “cockroaches”.

Mr. Modi has never apologized for failing to prevent the deaths of at least 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, during sectarian riots in the state of Gujarat while he was chief minister. He dismissed the slaughter as a “feeling of a puppy comes under the wheel of a car”.

Following the massacre he was denied visas from the US and Britain.

In a recent commentary, the notable Indian CNN commentator, Fareed Zakaria, offered some disturbing statistics –

33% of candidates who are running for election are facing serious criminal prosecutions including murder and attempted murder.

Kidnappings, murder and attempted murder have steadily increased since 2009.

Historically candidates with criminal backgrounds are 3 times more likely to win.

It is appalling that not a single religious leader has had the courage to denounce politicians who campaign with flamethrowers stoking vengeance against the Muslim 175m minority. Religions are supposed to effectively counterbalance “mob rule” and inject a semblance of humanity – a clear distinction of human rights – not meaningless incantations and rituals that few understand.

Sadly Congress, the BJP’s only national rival, has a dark history of corruption but has to its credit not descended into fanning the flames of religious intolerance. Perhaps they learned an important lesson in the 1984 slaughter of Sikhs, but I doubt it.

Is War Coming With Iran? 5-18-2019

                                                   Is War Coming With Iran?

The United Nations and a growing number of countries in the world are calling for an immediate ceasefire in war torn Yemen. Oxfam and other agencies are calling on the United States and European countries to end their support for the Saudi coalition. More and more Americans are reacting to the “gut-wrenching” images of starving Yemeni children. The airports and seaports have been devastated by Saudi-US bombing and the economic collapse have pushed food prices beyond the reach for most Yeminis intensifying hunger and famine. Images of young children reduced to flesh and bones have amplified demands for an immediate end to US and European weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Emirates. US bomb fragments have littered the Yemeni landscape intensifying anger towards the US. Civilian deaths have been grossly understated to minimize opposition of arms sales. Food supplies have been deliberately targeted intensifying shortages. The Saudis are also trying to close the port through which many supplies enter the country. The U.S. supplies the intelligence for the Saudi Air Force, which is carrying out massive atrocities making us complicit in Saudi’s war crimes. It is shameful that the army of Dems seeking the presidency, with the possible exception of Sanders, remain silent to the carnage. The karmic debt keeps mounting.

Iran 5-7-2019

7, May 2019                                      Iran

John Bolton, the hawkish national security advisor is huffing and puffing threatening the Islamic State of Iran “with “dire consequences”- while President Trump is preoccupied with the demons of impeachment and obstruction of justice. Both men have much in common. Both have never experienced the horrors of war, both escaped the draft. Bolton played a significant role in the fabrication of lies in the run-up to the Iraq war and pushing for that disastrous war. John Bolton’s lack of credibility on foreign policy is matched by Donald Trump’s lack of credibility on climate change. The bullying tactics of the Trump administration is forcing countries to boycott Iranian oil in favor of American oil buttressing up their profits.

In a rare moment of honesty Bolton admitted “all the WARS fought in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere were all about OIL & GAS”. There you have it. One sentence encapsulates American foreign policy. What do Venezuela, Iraq, Iran Libya and Afghanistan have in common? Oil and gas. Afghanistan serves as a critical pathway for transporting natural out of Turkmenistan.

Perhaps Bolton and his boss should turn back the pages of history and review the dark role of the CIA in its overthrow of the Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mosaddeq in a 1953 coup, snatching democracy from the people of Iran. The US installed the demonic Shah of Iran who purchased billions of dollars of US weapons and used the Savak secret police to terrorize the Iranians. It’s time we apologized to the Iranian and offered them billions of dollars in reparations.

Egged on by our “allies” Israel and Saudi Arabia, Bolton will likely engage Iran in an escalation of war of words and a possible conflict which could easily spin out of control. Do we really wish to put our troops in harm’s way to defend two nations, Israel and Saudi Arabia who have an appalling history of human rights abuses? And as former Secretary of Defense Bob Gates said, the Saudis want to fight the Iranians to the last American.”

Paul Pillar, formerly with the CIA, commented “the Iranians have shown tremendous discipline and restraint, because they have not responded to these provocations from the Trump Administration, and they are still adhering to the nuclear deal from 2015”.
