28, February 2016 The fall of Dan Rather
The Sundance Film Festival has produced an
explosive film tracing the rise and fall of CBS reporter, Dan Rather. The
film’s director, legendary actor, Robert Redford played the lead role in, ‘All
the President's Men’, investigating the Watergate scandal that led to the
resignation of President Nixon. In his new film, TRUTH, Redford portrays CBS
reporter, Dan Rather who was forced to resign along with his producer, Mary Maples’
after they reported that George W. Bush received favorable treatment in the
U.S. Air National Guard to escape being drafted to Vietnam. Rather and Maple’s
investigation bears a close similarity to the investigation portrayed in All
the President's Men with one major exception. The Washington Post vigorously supported
reporters Woodward and Bernstein whereas CBS shamelessly abandoned their
premier anchor and producer. This is a tragic failure of CBS to hold those accountable
for gross abuse of power. If the truth had been exposed there is every
likelihood, George Bush would never have been elected president. Any tragic
example of the watchdogs of political power being cowered to silence and
offering their anchor and producer to be the fall guys.
