Haitian immigrants 9/16/2024

                                                           Haitian immigrants

I am writing in response to the recent coverage of the escalating threats and violence faced by Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, fueled by the racist lies perpetuated by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance. Their baseless claims, accusing Haitians of heinous acts such as eating pets, have led to a disturbing rise in hate and violence against this vulnerable community.
The situation in Springfield has reached a critical point. Hospitals, colleges, and City Hall have been forced to close or evacuate due to bomb threats linked to anger over the city’s resettlement of Haitian immigrants. Despite clear evidence debunking these allegations—such as investigations by local authorities finding no proof of such claims—Trump and Vance continue to perpetuate these dangerous narratives.
The impact of these lies extends far beyond Springfield. The fear and division sown by these falsehoods are palpable, with Haitian residents facing harassment, bullying, and threats in their daily lives. This behavior is not only harmful but undermines the community’s ability to thrive and contribute positively to the city’s economy and culture.
It is important to recognize the reality of the Haitian immigrant experience. As Guerline Jozef from the Haitian Bridge Alliance noted, Haitians have come to Springfield under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, legally and with the aim of contributing to the community. They have revitalized a struggling town, filled essential jobs, and supported local businesses. The attacks on them are not only baseless but also damaging to the broader fabric of American society.
Furthermore, Governor Mike DeWine and other local officials have confirmed that these claims about Haitians are unfounded. The governor has pointed out that these immigrants are legal, hardworking, and integral to Springfield’s economic resurgence.
We must stand united against the spreading of misinformation and hatred. As a community, it is crucial that we challenge these racist narratives and support our neighbors who are unjustly targeted. It is time to focus on facts, foster inclusivity, and ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background, are treated with dignity and respect.
In these challenging times, let us all commit to promoting truth and empathy rather than allowing fear and division to prevail.
