U.N. experts condemn Israel for mass starvation & violations of human rights
The United Nations' experts have provided a damning critique of the situation, emphasizing the severity of the humanitarian crisis and the allegations of a deliberate starvation campaign.
Michael Fakhri, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, has reported that Israel's actions in Gaza amount to a systematic starvation campaign affecting 2.3 million Palestinians. According to Fakhri, the current conditions in Gaza are unprecedented in their rapid and complete nature, with 50% of the population food insecure and 80% reliant on humanitarian aid even before the recent escalation of violence. His report describes how Israel's blockade, which began in 2000 and intensified in 2005, has led to severe malnutrition and a dire humanitarian crisis.
Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation, highlighted the grave health impacts of the lack of clean water in Gaza. The resulting increase in infectious diseases, particularly among children, underscores the critical nature of the water crisis in contributing to the overall humanitarian disaster.
Francesca Albanese, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, has underscored the broader implications of Israel's actions, framing them as part of a larger strategy to control as much land as possible while minimizing the Palestinian population. She warns that the violence extends beyond Gaza, with increasing attacks and arbitrary detentions across the West Bank and East Jerusalem, contributing to a systematic effort to displace Palestinians from their land.
The call for international action, including a ceasefire and sanctions, reflects a growing concern among human rights experts about the severity of the situation. The U.N. General Assembly's forthcoming resolution, which may address sanctions against Israel, will be a critical moment for the global community to respond to these findings.
In light of these reports, it is essential for the international community to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza with urgency and to ensure that measures are taken to prevent further loss of life and suffering. The global response will significantly impact the future of the Palestinian people and the broader international order.
