Israel’s growing apartheid in the West Bank 9/16/2024

Israel’s growing apartheid in the West Bank

Hagai El-Ad’s article, "One Issue on Which Israeli Extremists Are Mainstream," offers a critical and insightful analysis of the situation in the West Bank. Mr. El-Ad, who served as the executive director of the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem from 2014 to 2023, provides a compelling argument regarding the current state of affairs.
Indeed, Israel’s extensive settlement activities and administrative policies have led to a de facto annexation of the West Bank. The presence of over 700,000 settlers, supported by a complex infrastructure, underscores the permanence of this occupation.
El-Ad effectively argues that the extremism of figures like Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich reflects broader governmental policies. He further asserts that Israeli occupation is synonymous with apartheid. There are clear inequalities and restrictions imposed on Palestinians. The term “apartheid” aptly describes certain aspects the current reality
Finally, El-Ad's call for action from the international community is both timely and necessary. The United States and other allies must confront their roles in perpetuating or challenging this situation.
El-Ad's piece underscores the urgent need for a reassessment of Western policies towards Israel and the occupied territories. Failure to do so could lead to accusations of monumental hypocrisy and violations of basic human rights against the United States, Britain, and other European countries.
