14, May 2006 Response to local letter writer RE: Israel
What a pity Sheree Roth chose to criticize ‘Break the Wall’ rally at Stanford (Daily, May 12) through her pro-Israeli blinkered vision. It is doubtful that Roth was present at the rally otherwise she would have observed a large number of ‘non-Arabs’ (including several Jews) who were voicing their solidarity with their Palestinian brothers and sisters in opposition to Israel’s repressive policies.
Roth seems to be unaware that the separation wall will cut off a staggering 55,000 Palestinians and according to a ruling of the International Court of Justice at The Hague is a complete violation of international law. Roth also ignores the fact that Israel, as the occupying power, under the third Geneva Convention, is responsible for the safety and the welfare of the entire Palestinian population under occupation.
Roth conveniently ignores Israel’s illegal theft of Palestinian lands, its disdain for international laws and violation of a staggering 65 UN resolutions. Roth seems to be unaware that Israel has accumulated a huge stockpile of WMD’s largely ‘hidden’ from the international community. Roth also seems to be unaware that a disproportionate number of Palestinians have been killed and injured. Oxfam International issued a dire warning that withholding funds belonging to the Palestinians will only worsen the humanitarian crisis in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This unlawful action will not punish Hamas but simply give the Palestinians another reason to regard Israel as an aggressive and repressive occupying power and give rise to more violence and hatred.
