Stop Trump’s Rush to War: Remember 1953
President Trump’s recent threats against Iran — including the shocking suggestion of assassinating its supreme leader — signal a reckless lurch toward war. Pushed by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Trump is weighing U.S. military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, even though American intelligence agencies confirm Iran has not decided to build a nuclear weapon.Let us not forget history. In 1953, the CIA and British MI6 overthrew Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh after he moved to nationalize Iran’s oil, ending the British monopoly that had shamelessly looted Iranian resources. That coup installed the brutal Shah, whose reign of terror sparked the 1979 revolution. The Iranian people have not forgotten, even if U.S. leaders have.
Now, Israel — lacking the firepower to destroy Iran’s deeply buried nuclear facilities — is pressuring the U.S. to use its 30,000-pound “bunker buster” bomb and B-2 stealth bombers. These are American-only assets. Any strike would require direct U.S. involvement and could ignite a catastrophic regional war.
Congress must act. The Constitution gives only Congress the power to declare war. Yet for decades, presidents have bypassed this responsibility, launching wars across the globe under outdated authorizations. Senator Tim Kaine and Representative Ro Khanna are right: Trump must be forced to seek congressional approval before any attack on Iran.
If we value democracy — both ours and others’ — we must reject another illegal, unnecessary war born of arrogance, oil, and amnesia.
