Modi’s crackdown is an assault on Indian democracy - 10.11.2026

India’s Democracy cannot survive when its young citizens are dragged away for demanding their fundamental right to vote. The detention of thousands of protesters and the lockdown of Delhi are deeply alarming.

The reported removal of 130 million names from the voter roll demands urgent, independent scrutiny. If these changes undermine citizens’ voting rights and strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s grip on power, they threaten the very foundation of Democracy.

A government confident in its legitimacy should welcome scrutiny, not silence critics. Blocking trains, closing metro stations, restricting internet access and detaining peaceful demonstrators evoke the darkest chapters of India’s history, including the Emergency under Indira Gandhi.

The Election Commission must explain transparently how millions of names disappeared and guarantee that every eligible Indian can vote. Parliament, the judiciary and civil society must defend the Constitution and demand accountability.

India belongs to its people, not to Modi or his party. The courage of young protesters reminds us that Democracy requires citizens who refuse to remain silent. Release those detained for peaceful protest, protect their rights and ensure free, fair and inclusive elections. The world must not look away while the world’s largest Democracy risks betraying its own people.
