Crossing the Red Line - Alliance must never silence conscience - 10.4.2026

The interview with Akbar Shahid Ahmed on Amanpour & Company raises a profound question about America’s relationship with Israel.

Ahmed’s book, Crossing the Red Line, raises disturbing questions about what U.s. officials knew about the suffering in Gaza and how they responded.

If reports that Jake Sullivan and Brett McGurk dismissed signs of Palestinian starvation by saying Palestinians “don’t look skinny” are accurate, they represent a shocking failure of human compassion. Sullivan has denied making the remark.

How can Palestinian children be starving, hospitals and schools be destroyed, and Gaza be reduced to ruins while American officials continue to describe Israel as a valued ally?

Being an ally must never mean giving a government a blank check.

History should warn us against such thinking. Saying that a country is an ally does not make everything its government does acceptable.

It would be morally wrong to suggest that Germany’s alliances or political relationships could have excused the persecution and murder of Jewish people.

The lesson of history is simple: human rights must come before alliances.

Israel’s security matters. Palestinian lives matter. Israeli lives matter. Every civilian life matters.

America must never allow strategic alliances to become an excuse for silence, double standards or impunity.

The time for accountability, equal human dignity and justice for Palestinians and Israelis is now.
