Artificial intelligence is becoming one of the most powerful forces shaping our society, yet its enormous power is developing faster than the laws needed to govern it.
We must not allow a handful of enormously wealthy technology companies and their leaders to gain unchecked power over our elections, information, economy, privacy and democracy. Technology should serve humanity—not become a tool through which private interests can dominate public life.
AI can transform medicine, education, science and communication. But without strong democratic oversight, it can also magnify inequality, spread disinformation, eliminate jobs and concentrate unprecedented power in the hands of a few.
The public must have a meaningful voice in deciding how AI is developed and deployed. Governments must establish strong safeguards, transparency requirements, accountability and protections for workers, consumers and democratic institutions.
This is not a battle against technology. It is a demand that technology remain accountable to humanity.
We must regulate AI before its power becomes so concentrated that democracy can no longer effectively regulate it.
The stakes could be even higher. AI safety researchers, including Evan Hubinger of Anthropic, have warned about the possibility of AI posing an existential threat to humanity. Such warnings should not be ignored.
