Above the Law: Why Civilians Pay the Ultimate Price - 10.18.2026

I am deeply troubled by the warning from Mirjana Spoljaric, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, that the world is becoming more dangerous as armed conflicts multiply and leaders disregard humanitarian laws.

I fear we are becoming dangerously accustomed to war, civilian deaths, and human suffering. We must not wait for a formally declared World War before recognizing the global crisis unfolding around us.

The Geneva Conventions were established to protect humanity even during war. Yet their principles are meaningless when powerful governments ignore them and the international community fails to demand accountability.

From Gaza to Ukraine and Iran, civilians must never become expendable. No nation, army, or political leader should stand above international humanitarian law.

I believe our greatest danger is not only the spread of war but also the erosion of empathy. Silence and indifference allow atrocities to continue.

I urge world leaders to respect international law, protect civilians, pursue diplomacy, and hold violators accountable. Humanity must rediscover its conscience before another generation inherits a world consumed by conflict.
