Donald Trump’s decision to exempt Russia from new sanctions risks rewarding Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine. While Russian missiles and drones continue killing civilians and destroying Ukrainian cities, Trump is easing economic pressure on Moscow and allowing countries to continue purchasing Russian oil.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky rightly warns that lifting sanctions helps Russia prolong the war rather than bring peace. Weakening sanctions also undermines the bipartisan effort to restrict Russia’s ability to finance its military operations.
Equally troubling are reports that restrictions on Ukraine’s military satellite communications disrupted its operations. Although Trump denies ordering these restrictions, the incident demands an independent investigation.
America should stand with victims of aggression, not strengthen the hand of the aggressor. Economic pressure, accountability and meaningful diplomatic efforts are essential to ending this war. Congress must demand transparency, enforce effective sanctions and ensure that American policy supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
Peace cannot be achieved by rewarding aggression or abandoning a nation fighting for its survival.
