Dear President Biden and Vice President Harris,
The greatest gift bestowed upon humanity is the life of a child. The greatest crime is the deliberate injury or murder of an innocent child. While debates over the rights of the unborn continue here at home, the systematic killing and maiming of children in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon persists—funded by our tax dollars.
It is incomprehensible that while our government and media remain silent, genocide is unfolding before our eyes. Our nation must reckon with the atrocities being committed with our support. Chicago doctors who have worked in Gaza over the past year are pleading for a ceasefire after Israel’s recent airstrikes in Lebanon. One such doctor, Rajaa Musleh, shared a devastating story of a 10-year-old girl whose life was shattered by an Israeli airstrike. Blind and fatally burned, this child died in Musleh’s arms. Now, as Israel's latest airstrikes in Beirut have claimed over 1,400 lives, stories like this girl’s will multiply unless we stop the slaughter.
Over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023—an undercount—and yet, the U.S. continues to fund this devastation. As the doctors at a recent press conference in Chicago reminded us, "The people in Gaza are not just numbers. They are human beings who deserve the right to health care, to dream, to rebuild their future. The children of Gaza deserve to live."
I urge you to end U.S. military aid to Israel and to push for an immediate ceasefire. Our nation must stop being complicit in the murder of innocent children and the destruction of entire communities. This is a matter of conscience and humanity.
