The Greatest Crime Against Humanity
The greatest gift bestowed upon mankind is the gift of a child. The greatest crime is the deliberate injury or murder of a child. While the debate over the rights of the unborn rages on in the US, the deliberate killing and horrific injuries of innocent children continue in Gaza , the West Bank and Lebanon, with bombs funded by our tax dollars. Our government and corporate media remain silent, refusing to stop the genocide taking place in Israel and now in Lebanon.Chicago doctors who worked in Gaza have been pleading for a ceasefire after Israeli strikes in Lebanon. "The people in Gaza, they are not just numbers," said Rajaa Musleh, the Gaza country director for the Rolling Meadows-based nonprofit MedGlobal.
Musleh shared a heartbreaking story from Gaza: every night, a 10-year-old girl visits her in her dreams. At a hospital in Gaza, Musleh held the girl's hand as she lost her vision and ultimately died after an Israeli airstrike. Now, with Israel’s recent airstrikes in Beirut killing over 1,400 people, Musleh fears that more stories like this will continue with no end in sight. "She asked me to lie beside her in bed, but because she was completely burned, I couldn’t. Every night in my dreams, she asks me why I didn’t lie beside her."
Doctors from Chicago who have worked in Gaza over the past year are begging the U.S. government to stop funding Israel's military, which has killed over 40,000 (a gross undercount) Palestinians since the war started last October. The destruction is nearly incomprehensible, and unless the U.S. withdraws its support, Israel will continue to decimate the region. These doctors, speaking at a press conference hosted by the Chicago branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, reminded us of a simple truth: "The people in Gaza, they are not numbers. They are human beings who deserve the right to health care, to dream, to rebuild Gaza, its universities, its schools. The children of Gaza deserve to live."
