U.S. and Israel: Escalating Violence in Lebanon at a Time of Crisis 19/2/2024

U.S. and Israel: Escalating Violence in Lebanon at a Time of Crisis

Israel's announcement of sending more troops into southern Lebanon marks a dangerous escalation that moves the Middle East closer to a full-scale regional war. The latest exchange—180 ballistic missiles fired by Iran at Israel, supposedly targeting military sites—follows months of Israeli attacks on Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iranian leaders. While the U.S. helped Israel intercept many missiles, this retaliation is no isolated incident; it’s part of a growing cycle of violence in the region.
President Biden’s vow to support Israel’s further retaliation only adds fuel to the fire. As an Israeli analyst noted, Israel’s supposed "control" of the situation is an illusion. In reality, Israeli aggression has led to chaos and insecurity at home. The assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is just the latest example of Israel's reckless actions, celebrated as “justice” by the Biden administration, even as it risks dragging the U.S. into a broader war.
Meanwhile, U.S. media has largely ignored Israel’s relentless bombings in Gaza, where 79 Palestinian civilians were killed in just one day. It’s clear that both Israel and the U.S. are focused on military objectives, while the suffering of civilians—Palestinians in Gaza and Lebanon—remains an afterthought.
The Biden-Harris administration must seriously reconsider its role in enabling these atrocities. The billions spent on U.S. military aid and deploying troops to the region are at odds with the crises at home—climate disasters, economic insecurity, and healthcare needs affecting thousands of Americans. Supporting Israel’s destructive actions does nothing but perpetuate violence, with no strategy for peace or stability.
It’s time for the U.S. to leverage its unique influence over Israel not to escalate further, but to call for an immediate ceasefire and shift toward diplomacy.
