The U.S. Must Reevaluate Support for Israeli Apartheid
Since its creation in 1948, Israel has systematically driven out and killed the indigenous Palestinian population, with the remaining Palestinians relegated to second-class status. Those who remain in the West Bank and Gaza live under oppressive occupation, denied basic human rights. The situation in Gaza, often described as the largest open-air prison in the world, worsened long before the events of October 7. Periodic bombings by Israel, which they euphemistically call “mowing the grass,” have decimated civilian populations, infrastructure, and hope for peace.Despite clear evidence of ethnic cleansing, systematic violence, and apartheid policies, U.S. support for Israel has remained unwavering. U.S.-supplied weapons are used to perpetuate these crimes, erasing Palestinians from their own land. The apartheid system enforced by Israel—marked by checkpoints, segregation, and special privileges for Israelis, such as bypassing these checkpoints with special license plates—is reminiscent of, but arguably worse than, the apartheid in South Africa.
What is the rationale for U.S. backing of such a regime? Israel’s actions violate international law, human rights, and the very principles of democracy the U.S. claims to uphold. How can we justify supporting a nation that has created a living nightmare for Palestinians while continuing to deprive them of freedom, dignity, and their homeland?
It’s time for the U.S. to reexamine its role in enabling these atrocities and end its complicity in Israel’s apartheid system.
