: The U.S. Must Reevaluate Support for Israeli Apartheid
Dear President Biden and Vice President Harris,
Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has systematically displaced and killed the indigenous Palestinian population, with the remaining Palestinians living as second-class citizens. Those in the West Bank and Gaza endure an oppressive occupation, stripped of basic human rights. Gaza, often described as the largest open-air prison in the world, faced worsening conditions long before the tragic events of October 7. Israel’s periodic bombings, disturbingly termed "mowing the grass," have devastated civilian populations, obliterated infrastructure, and dashed any hope for lasting peace.
Despite clear evidence of ethnic cleansing, systematic violence, and apartheid policies, U.S. support for Israel has remained unwavering. U.S.-supplied weapons are used to sustain these atrocities, effectively erasing Palestinians from their own land. Israel enforces an apartheid system, marked by segregation, checkpoints, and special privileges for Israelis—such as the ability to bypass these checkpoints with special license plates. This system echoes, and arguably exceeds, the apartheid that once gripped South Africa.
What is the rationale for continued U.S. backing of such a regime? Israel’s actions blatantly violate international law, human rights, and the democratic principles that the United States claims to champion. How can we, as a nation, justify supporting a government that has created a living nightmare for Palestinians, depriving them of their freedom, dignity, and homeland?
It is long past time for the U.S. to reexamine its role in perpetuating these injustices and end its complicity in Israel’s apartheid system.
