America must confront two disturbing threats to democracy: cyberattacks against environmental advocates and escalating violence against Palestinians.
The allegations that Israeli private investigator Amit Forlit hacked American environmentalists demand a thorough, independent investigation. No individual or company should be permitted to intimidate activists or undermine environmental protection through illegal surveillance. If these allegations are proven, those responsible must face justice, regardless of their nationality or connections.
Equally alarming are reports that Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians and a Washington Post journalist in the occupied West Bank. Journalists must be protected, and Palestinians must not be abandoned to violence, intimidation, and dispossession. The Israeli government must prevent settler attacks, prosecute perpetrators, and end policies that enable impunity.
Democracy cannot survive when powerful interests silence environmental defenders, attack journalists, or deny vulnerable communities their basic rights. The United States must demand accountability from its allies as firmly as it does from its adversaries.
The principles are universal: freedom of the press, environmental protection, equal human rights, and the rule of law. Political alliances must never excuse criminal conduct. Justice requires transparent investigations, meaningful consequences, and protection for those who expose wrongdoing.
