Marwan Barghouti has become a powerful symbol of the Palestinian struggle for freedom, dignity and justice. His reported years of isolation and imprisonment should shock the conscience of the world.
No political solution can be lasting while Palestinians remain imprisoned, occupied and denied their basic rights. The treatment of political prisoners must be examined independently, and those responsible for abuses must be held accountable.
Israel must release prisoners who have been detained without justice, particularly humanitarian workers, journalists and others whose work is essential to protecting civilians and telling the truth.
The international community must stop treating Palestinian suffering as a secondary issue. Gaza needs food, medicine, reconstruction and freedom of movement. Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank deserve the same human rights, security and dignity that every other people deservs.
The world cannot build peace through permanent occupation, imprisonment and fear. It is time for justice, equality and genuine freedom for both Palestinians and Israelis.
