The segment followed Michael Giardina, a Navy veteran, and other veterans who participated in a supervised psychedelic-mushroom retreat in Mexico. Giardina had experienced serious childhood trauma as well as trauma connected with his later life and military service. During the psilocybin experience, painful memories and emotions resurfaced, but he described the experience as ultimately helping him confront rather than suppress those experiences.
The important point was that PTSD may involve trauma that began before military service, and psychedelic-assisted therapy may help some people process deeply buried trauma. Nearly a year after the retreat, eight of nine participants reported that the experience had been life-changing and that their PTSD symptoms had improved.
