The New York Times interviewed 24 detainees and reviewed medical records documenting serious injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured vertebra, a broken coccyx and a collapsed lung. Detainees also described beatings, electric shocks, rubber bullets and degrading treatment. One woman alleged sexual assault and rape. Israel denies these allegations and calls them false.
If these allegations are substantiated, they demand an independent international investigation and accountability. No government should be above international law—not even Israel.
The activists were attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The world cannot remain silent when people performing an act of humanitarian solidarity allegedly emerge from detention with such serious injuries.
Israel should provide full access to its detention facilities to independent international investigators. Humanitarian workers and peaceful activists must be protected, not brutalized.
The message from people around the world, including Jews for Peace and Gen Z, should be unmistakable: humanitarian aid must reach Gaza, detainees must be treated humanely, and alleged abuses must be investigated. Accountability is not ant The world must halt all aid to Israel and redirect aid, under international military escort, to starving Palestinians, while providing them with weapons to defend themselves against Israeli terrorists.
