The rise of socialist candidates reflects a simple truth: people want politicians who listen to them. When working families struggle with housing costs, health care, wages, education and basic economic security, they expect government to respond—not to serve wealthy donors and powerful interests.
Socialists are gaining support because they are speaking directly to these concerns and offering policies aimed at improving ordinary people's lives. Their success should be a warning to establishment politicians who assume that voters will remain loyal regardless of whether their government delivers.
Democracy works best when elected officials listen, engage and respond. The lesson is not limited to socialism. Every political party should ask what people actually need and then fight to deliver it.
