Artificial intelligence is advancing at breathtaking speed while public safeguards lag dangerously behind. As fears grow about rogue AI systems capable of acting beyond human control, experts are urging governments to "bring this to a grinding halt" until meaningful protections are in place.
Sen. Bernie Sanders has issued a stark warning that AI must serve humanity—not enrich a handful of billionaires while threatening jobs, democracy, privacy and even human survival. His warning deserves immediate attention. We have seen what happens when powerful industries are allowed to regulate themselves: the climate crisis, financial crashes and social media disinformation.
We would never permit unsafe aircraft, medicines or nuclear facilities to operate without rigorous oversight. AI should be held to at least the same standard. The race for profits and geopolitical dominance must never outweigh the public interest.
Once dangerous AI capabilities are widely released, the consequences may be impossible to reverse. Governments must act now with strong, enforceable safeguards before humanity loses control of the technologies it created.
