The Department of Justice is supposed to be America's guardian of the rule of law—not a shield for the powerful or a weapon against political opponents. Yet many Americans fear it is drifting toward what critics have called a "Department of Injustice."
Norm Eisen has raised serious concerns about the nomination of Todd Blanche, arguing that the Justice Department risks losing the independence that is essential to any functioning democracy. If the nation's chief law enforcement agency is perceived as rewarding political loyalty over fidelity to the Constitution, public confidence in equal justice will continue to erode.
Justice must never depend on wealth, influence, or political connections. The Attorney General's highest duty is to the Constitution and the American people—not to any president or political movement.
History shows that democracies begin to fail when prosecutors become instruments of political power instead of impartial guardians of the law. America cannot afford a Justice Department whose independence is questioned by millions of its own citizens.
The rule of law is the cornerstone of a free society. Once that cornerstone is weakened, every American's liberty is at risk.
