The world rightly remembers with horror the crimes committed by the Nazi regime and the terrible suffering of the Jewish people. That history makes today's suffering of Palestinian civilians especially tragic and demands renewed commitment to justice, human dignity, and international law.
For decades, the United States, the United Kingdom, and other European nations have provided Israel with substantial military and economic support. Yet the continuing war in Gaza, the deaths of thousands of civilians, widespread destruction, hunger, displacement, and repeated reports of suffering have generated outrage around the world. Images of families living in tents, struggling to find food and safety, have deeply shocked many people.
The Hebrew Scriptures repeatedly call for justice, mercy, and protection of the vulnerable. "Justice, justice shall you pursue" (Deuteronomy 16:20). "You shall not oppress the stranger" (Exodus 22:21). "What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly" (Micah 6:8). These principles challenge every nation and every people.
Lasting peace will not come through hatred, vengeance, or endless war. It requires equal respect for the lives, dignity, freedom, and security of both Palestinians and Israelis, together with accountability for violations of international law by all parties.
