Kansas State Senator Cindy Holscher, the Democratic nominee for governor, is right to keep the focus on affordability. As families struggle with rising housing, food, healthcare, and utility costs, government should put people before powerful corporate interests.
Large data centers may bring investment, but they also consume enormous amounts of electricity and water while often receiving generous taxpayer-funded incentives. Before approving these subsidies, public officials should require complete transparency about the true costs and benefits.
Economic development should improve the lives of working families, not simply increase corporate profits or shift costs onto taxpayers and utility customers. Every incentive package should be measured by one simple question: Will it make life more affordable for ordinary people?
Affordability—not corporate giveaways—should be the top priority for every elected official.
