World on Fire - 8.6.2026

America's worsening "fire climate" is not an unavoidable natural disaster. It is the predictable result of decades of greenhouse gas pollution driven largely by the fossil fuel industry and enabled by political inaction.

Hotter temperatures, prolonged drought and powerful winds are creating the conditions for larger, faster and deadlier wildfires that destroy homes, forests, wildlife, livelihoods and lives. Firefighters are being asked to confront infernos that are becoming impossible to contain.

The costs are staggering, yet some politicians continue protecting the profits of oil, gas and coal companies instead of protecting the public. Taxpayers should not bear the enormous costs while those who profited from fueling the climate crisis escape accountability.

We know what must be done: rapidly reduce fossil fuel emissions, expand clean energy, restore forests and strengthen community resilience. Every year of delay guarantees more destruction. The time for excuses has passed. The time for courageous action is now.
