Honoring the Saints of War Zones - 10.3.2025

In war zones from Sudan to Gaza, the world witnesses not only unimaginable suffering but also extraordinary courage. The recent killing of Dr. Atif al-Atta, a Sudanese physician who described the horrors of war just days before he was slain, reminds us of the incredible heroism of doctors and journalists who risk their lives daily to serve humanity and to tell the truth.

These men and women are modern-day saints. Doctors work in bombed-out hospitals, often with no supplies, treating the wounded and starving. Reporters step into danger to ensure the world cannot turn away. Their bravery embodies the highest ideals of service and sacrifice.
Religious leaders and communities in particular have a sacred obligation to raise their voices in defense of these heroes and the civilians they serve. Too often, silence or political expedience mutes moral clarity. If faith means anything, it must mean standing with those who give their lives for truth, healing, and justice.

The memory of Dr. al-Atta — and countless others like him — should awaken us to act, to speak, and to honor the sanctity of their sacrifice.
