President Trump’s recently announced 20-point “peace plan” for Gaza is being hailed by some as a breakthrough, but in reality it is little more than a repackaging of Israel’s ongoing assault on Palestinians. Trump unveiled the proposal alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who quickly backed away from even its minimal promises, including a call for eventual troop withdrawal. Tellingly, Palestinians were not consulted in the plan’s creation.
Palestinian human rights attorney Diana Buttu rightly calls the proposal “certainly not a plan that is going to end the genocide.” Instead, it ensures continued Israeli control, with vague provisions for international oversight led by Trump himself under a so-called “Board of Peace.” Guarantees in the plan are extended solely to Israel—none to Palestinians. Even the claim of offering a “pathway” to Palestinian statehood is contradicted by Netanyahu’s outright rejection of such a goal.True peace cannot be dictated by those who are carrying out or supporting the violence. Palestinians should not be forced to “negotiate an end to their genocide.” A genuine peace plan must begin with accountability, justice, and Palestinian self-determination—not cosmetic repackaging.
