The Treasury Department’s threat to sanction Iran and its trading partners — essentially declaring, “you are either with us or against us” — echoes the dangerous rhetoric used by President George W. Bush before the invasion of Iraq.
that War devastated Iraq, killed tens of thousands of Iraqis, and involved abuses including waterboarding. the claim that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction proved false, as did attempts to link Saddam Hussein’s regime to the 9/11 attacks.
we should not repeat this history with Iran. Britain and the United States played a major role in destabilizing Iran, including the CIA-backed overthrow of Iran’s democratically elected Government in 1953 after its decision to nationalize its Oil Industry.
great Powers rarely acknowledge or make meaningful amends for such destructive interventions. instead, they too often resort to Sanctions, Threats and Military pressure.
if America and its Allies truly believe in Justice and International Law, they should confront their own History honestly. rather than threatening Iran with “with us or against us” ultimatums, we should pursue Diplomacy, Accountability and Reconciliation.
the United States and Britain owe the People of Iran and Iraq a profound Moral Reckoning — and,, Reparations — for the immense suffering caused by past Interventions.
