The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat. It is here, growing more dangerous and affecting people around the world. Record-breaking heat, extreme weather, rising seas and other consequences of climate change remind us that we cannot continue treating this emergency as tomorrow’s problem.
Every fraction of a degree of additional warming matters. Even if humanity cannot completely stop climate change, reducing warming by every tenth of a degree can save lives, protect communities and reduce suffering.
There is also reason for hope. Clean energy is advancing rapidly. Solar power, batteries and other renewable technologies are becoming increasingly affordable. Countries such as China have demonstrated what is possible when governments create large markets for clean energy and invest seriously in the future.
America must accelerate this transition. Citizens, states, cities and businesses should not wait for Washington to act. We must expand solar and wind power, improve energy efficiency and rapidly reduce our dependence on coal, oil and gas.
There is another important lesson: nations do not need to fight wars over sunlight. The sun provides an abundant source of energy for everyone. Cooperation on clean energy can help create prosperity and peace rather than conflict.
The climate emergency is immense, but humanity still has choices. We must choose action over delay, cooperation over conflict, and clean energy over fossil fuels. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.
