The Stanford Daily’s victory in its lawsuit against the Trump administration should remind every American that Freedom Of Speech is not a privilege granted by the government—it is a Constitutional Right.
U.S. District Judge NOËL WISE ruled that federal immigration laws could not constitutionally be used to punish noncitizens for protected political speech. The case arose amid concerns that Pro-Palestinian students and journalists could face visa revocation, detention, or deportation because of their views. (Stanford Daily)
This ruling sends an essential message: the government cannot silence political dissent by threatening a student’s ability to remain in the United States. A free press cannot function when student journalists fear that reporting on controversial issues could cost them their freedom or their future.
The First Amendment protects unpopular speech precisely because powerful institutions may be tempted to suppress criticism. That protection must apply regardless of whether the speech concerns Israel, Palestine, the government, or any other contentious issue.
The Stanford Daily’s case is therefore about more than one newspaper. It is about whether America will remain a country where students can question authority without fear.
Congress, universities, courts, and citizens must defend that principle.
Freedom Of Speech must never depend on political viewpoint.
