Israel’s latest airstrikes on Kfar Rumman in southern Lebanon should shock the conscience of the world. At least 12 people were killed, including two children, when a residential building was struck. A separate drone strike killed a medic.
Israel says it was targeting people transferring weapons for Hezbollah and that measures were taken to minimize civilian casualties. But when residential buildings are struck and children and emergency workers die, the world must demand answers.
How can such attacks continue under a U.S.-backed ceasefire framework? Where is the accountability? And how many more Lebanese civilians must die before the United States and its allies demand an end to the violence?
The United States has enormous influence over Israel. It should use that influence to insist on an immediate cessation of attacks against civilians, full investigations of alleged violations, protection for medical workers and genuine negotiations toward a lasting peace.
Children should not be paying the price for the failures of governments and armed groups. The killing must stop.
