The Crisis Did Not Begin On October 7, 2023. To Understand Today’s Horror, We Must Look Back To The Founding Of Israel, When Hundreds Of Thousands Of Palestinians Were Displaced During The War Of 1948 And Many Lost Their Homes And Homeland. For Palestinians, The Trauma Did Not Begin On One Day In 2023. It Has Been Shaped By Decades Of Dispossession, Occupation, Settlement Expansion, Home Demolitions And Violence.
October 7 Was A Terrible Day. The Killing Of Israeli Civilians And The Taking Of Hostages Were Wrong. But The Killing Of Innocent People Did Not Begin, And Must Not End, With One Date.
Now Canada, France, The U.K. And Other Nations Have Taken Action Against Trade Connected To Israeli Settlements In The Occupied West Bank. This Is An Important Step, But It Is Not Enough.
The World Has Witnessed The Destruction Of Palestinian Homes, The Expansion Of Settlements And A Humanitarian Catastrophe In Gaza. It Has Also Witnessed The Enormous Military And Political Support Given To Israel By Powerful Western Governments. The United States And European Nations Must Examine Their Own Responsibility When Weapons, Diplomatic Protection And Political Support Continue Despite The Suffering Of Civilians.
There Is Also A Serious Question About Accountability At The Highest Levels Of Israeli Government. A Recent Report Claims That BENJAMIN NETANYAHU Was Warned Before The October 7 Attack. NETANYAHU Denies Receiving Such A Warning. The Truth Must Be Established Through A Genuine, Independent Investigation.
And We Must Remember RACHEL CORRIE, The Young American Peace Activist Who Was Killed In Gaza In 2003 While Taking Nonviolent Action To Protect The Home Of A Palestinian Family From Demolition. Her Death Became A Symbol Of The Human Cost Of Occupation And Of Those Who Risk Their Lives To Defend Others.
A Government Cannot Claim The Moral High Ground While Ignoring The Humanity Of Another People. Democracy Means More Than Elections. It Requires Equality, Accountability, Human Rights And Respect For The Law. The Rise Of Far-Right And Ultra-Nationalist Forces Within Israel’s Government Makes These Principles Even More Urgent.
The World Must Stop Treating Palestinian Lives As Less Valuable Than Other Lives. Starvation, Collective Punishment, Forced Displacement And The Destruction Of Civilian Life Must Never Be Accepted As The Price Of Security.
The Time Has Come For Truth About October 7, Truth About The Long History That Preceded It, Accountability For All Crimes Against Civilians And An End To The Occupation And Violence.
Every Israeli Child And Every Palestinian Child Has The Same Right To Live In Peace, Safety And Dignity.
