The continued detention of Dr. Ahmed Abu Safiya is deeply troubling. Physicians have a duty to save lives, regardless of nationality, religion, or politics. Medical professionals should never be punished simply for carrying out their humanitarian responsibilities.
The international community must insist that Israel respect international humanitarian law and protect doctors, nurses, hospitals, patients and civilians during armed conflict. Justice and human dignity require that medical workers be allowed to provide care without fear of detention or persecution.
I join those calling for the immediate release of Dr. Ahmed Abu Safiya and for the protection of all healthcare workers serving civilians in conflict zones.
