The current conflict with Iran cannot be understood without examining history. In 1951, Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, seeking to return control of Iran’s oil resources to the Iranian people. Britain, under Prime Minister WINSTON CHURCHILL, responded with economic pressure, while the United States and Britain later supported Operation Ajax, the 1953 CIA-MI6 covert operation that removed Mosaddegh’s democratically elected government.
The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company later became BP, one of the world’s largest energy companies. Decades of foreign intervention, sanctions, and military threats have contributed to deep resentment and instability in the region.
History does not justify attacks on civilians or violations of international law by any government. However, lasting peace requires honesty about past actions. The United States and United Kingdom should acknowledge the consequences of their policies, support diplomacy over war, and help repair the damage caused by decades of confrontation.
War cannot erase history. Only accountability, dialogue, and respect for national sovereignty can build a more peaceful future. good start would be for the U.S. and Britain to pay massive reparations for the theft of Iran's oil and the destruction of its democracy.
