The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is reshaping our world, but at what cost? As Karen Hao warns in Empire of AI, the concentration of AI power in the hands of a few giant corporations threatens democracy, privacy, jobs, and human rights.
AI data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and millions of gallons of water for cooling, placing growing burdens on local communities already facing water shortages, higher utility costs, and strained electric grids. To meet soaring energy demands, some companies are turning to nuclear power. While nuclear energy produces low carbon emissions, expanding it to serve AI raises legitimate concerns about safety, radioactive waste, accident risks, and the diversion of national resources toward private corporate interests.
The race to dominate AI is creating a new form of colonialism in which data, labor, natural resources, and even democratic institutions are exploited for corporate profit. Without strong public oversight, transparency, and accountability, AI could deepen inequality, spread misinformation, eliminate jobs, and weaken democratic decision-making.
Technology should serve humanity—not the other way around. Governments must establish enforceable safeguards to protect human dignity, civil liberties, communities, and the environment. We must act now before technological power becomes political power beyond public accountability.
