What Is Fueling the War in Sudan? - 7.8.2026

Sudan's devastating civil war is being fueled not only by rival Sudanese factions but also by foreign powers pursuing their own strategic interests. Investigations, including the documentary Inside the Secret Network Fueling Sudan's War, report allegations that the United Arab Emirates has supplied weapons and other support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), despite international concerns that the group has committed widespread atrocities against civilians. The UAE has denied these allegations.

Meanwhile, Egypt has backed the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), reflecting its security concerns along the Nile and its desire for stability on its southern border. Other countries, including Iran, Russia, and Turkey, have also been linked to varying degrees of military, political, or economic support for different actors in Sudan, while competition for influence, access to Red Sea ports, mineral resources—especially gold—and regional power has further intensified the conflict.

If credible evidence confirms that any government has armed or financed forces responsible for war crimes or crimes against humanity, those responsible should face full international accountability. No nation should prolong Sudan's suffering by supplying weapons or political cover to abusive armed groups.

The people of Sudan desperately need an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian assistance, independent investigations into alleged atrocities, and sustained diplomatic efforts to end the violence. Human life—not geopolitical rivalry, access to resources, or regional influence—must become the international community's highest priority.
