Israel's continued strikes on Lebanon despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, its approval of new settlements in the West Bank, the ongoing destruction in Gaza, and allegations that Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya was disfigured by torture raise profound moral and legal questions.
Why are American taxpayers funding policies that many international organizations and human rights advocates say violate international law? Military aid should never be unconditional. It should be tied to respect for ceasefires, protection of civilian lives, human rights, and international humanitarian law.
Every nation has the right to security, but lasting peace cannot be built through endless war, settlement expansion, or the suffering of civilians. The United States should use its influence to advance diplomacy, accountability, and equal human dignity for Palestinians alike.
American tax dollars should advance peace, not perpetuate conflict. Our elected leaders owe taxpayers a clear explanation of how continued military support serves America's values and long-term national interests. Accountability, respect for human rights, and a genuine commitment to peace should guide U.S. policy.
