The meeting between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite the outstanding ICC arrest warrant has intensified concerns about the consistent application of international law. U.N. Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has sharply criticized U.S. policy, arguing that continued political and military support risks making the United States complicit in alleged violations of international law.
Her warning deserves serious public debate. The credibility of international justice depends on applying the same legal standards to every nation and every leader. Selective enforcement undermines the rule of law and weakens global confidence in institutions created to protect human rights and civilian lives.
If international law is to have meaning, powerful nations must demonstrate that no ally and no adversary is above accountability. Justice must be guided by principles, not politics.
