The AI Power Grab: High Costs, Elite Control, and the Fight for Democratic Oversight - 7.5.2026

Journalist Karen Hao warns that the race to build artificial intelligence is no longer just about innovation. It is about concentrating unprecedented power in the hands of a few corporations led by figures such as Sam Altman and OpenAI. Hao describes the drive toward artificial general intelligence as taking on a quasi-religious character, where promises of a glorious future are used to justify enormous costs and risks today.

Communities are already paying the price. Massive AI data centers consume staggering amounts of electricity and water, strain local infrastructure, and increasingly rely on nuclear power to meet soaring energy demands. Meanwhile, democracy, privacy, jobs, and independent knowledge are threatened as a handful of technology giants gain control over the digital future.

Artificial intelligence should serve humanity—not the ambitions or profits of a few corporations. Governments must require transparency, democratic oversight, environmental accountability, and strong public safeguards before AI becomes too powerful to regulate.

The future of democracy must never be surrendered to unelected technology elites.
