Demanding a newsroom's internal communications and financial records because of its reporting on U.S. deportations, ICE practices, Cuba, Palestine, and American foreign policy sets a troubling precedent.
Journalist Rania Khalek warns that such actions resemble the McCarthy era, when government power was used to intimidate and silence critics. Whether one agrees with BreakThrough News or not, using congressional authority to investigate journalists over their reporting threatens the First Amendment and undermines the role of an independent press in a democracy.
A free society depends on the ability of journalists to investigate, question those in power, and publish without fear of political retaliation. Once governments begin targeting media organizations for their viewpoints, every journalist—and ultimately every citizen's right to know—is at risk.
Americans of all political persuasions should defend a free press and reject efforts to intimidate independent journalism.
