The invasion of Iraq was one of the most consequential mistakes of the post-9/11 era. Iraq was attacked in 2003 even though the 9/11 Commission found no evidence that Saddam Hussein’s government cooperated with Al-Qaeda in planning or carrying out the attacks on the United States. (911 Commission)
The human cost was catastrophic. Iraq Body Count records more than 114,000 documented civilian deaths from violence between 2003 and 2011, while its broader accounting estimated approximately 158,000 Iraqi deaths, including combatants, during that period. (Iraq Body Count)
Behind every number was a human being—a parent, child, brother, sister, friend or neighbour.
America, Britain and the other governments that supported the invasion should honestly confront this history. Most importantly, GEORGE W. BUSH and members of his administration should acknowledge the enormous consequences of attacking the wrong country after 9/11.
