Benjamin Netanyahu’s government appears determined to deepen a two-tier system of rule that has inflicted enormous suffering on Palestinians. Restrictions on Palestinian workers, withheld tax revenues, and banking restrictions have damaged the economy and weakened essential public services. Health care has suffered, with shortages of medicines and reduced staffing.
Mr. Netanyahu, you and your right-wing allies should remember Judaism’s own moral teachings.
The Torah commands: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Leviticus 19:18)
It also commands: “You shall not oppress the stranger.” (Exodus 22:21)
And Genesis teaches that every human being is created “in the image of God.” (Genesis 1:27)
The prophet Micah asks what God requires of us: “To do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)
These teachings do not distinguish between Jewish and Palestinian human dignity.
When political power, territory and survival become more important than justice, compassion and human life, Judaism’s highest values are betrayed.
The suffering of Palestinian children and families should trouble everyone who believes that human life is sacred.
Mr. Netanyahu, history will judge whether you upheld Judaism’s highest moral values—or abandoned them in the pursuit of power.
