META should be held accountable for the dangers its addictive algorithms can pose to children.
Social-media platforms are not simply showing children what they want to see. Their algorithms are designed to keep users engaged—encouraging them to stay longer, scroll further and return repeatedly. For children, whose brains and judgment are still developing, this can be especially harmful.
META has faced lawsuits seeking billions of dollars in damages over allegations that its platforms contribute to harm among young users. These allegations deserve serious public and governmental scrutiny.
We should not allow corporate profits to come before the well-being of our children. If META’s algorithms are deliberately designed to keep children hooked, the company must be required to change those practices and put child safety ahead of maximizing engagement.
Our children deserve technology that serves them—not technology engineered to keep them addicted.
