Humanitarian access is another devastating test. The ceasefire agreement called for 600 aid trucks entering Gaza each day, yet the International Crisis Group reports that available evidence suggests the target has not been consistently met. Data cited by the International Peace Institute put the July-August average at only 69 trucks per day.

Muhammad Shehada warns that Netanyahu is using Gaza’s destruction and settler violence in the West Bank as part of his political campaign, while promising to “finish the job” if reelected. Netanyahu has also continued insisting that Israel will not withdraw before Hamas disarms.

Meanwhile, settler violence continues to threaten Palestinians in the West Bank.

This cannot be called lasting peace. A genuine ceasefire must mean an end to attacks, unrestricted humanitarian access, protection of civilians, accountability for abuses, and a credible political future for Palestinians and Israelis.

The confrontation with Iran has deep roots. In 1953, British and U.S. intelligence intervened in Iran after Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh nationalized the British-controlled oil company. Punishing news organizations because their reporting is critical threatens an essential principle of DEMOCRACY: the government must not control the press by deciding which journalists deserve access.

This has nothing to do with legitimate defense. When children who have already lost limbs are denied wheelchairs and essential medical equipment, it becomes an appalling question of humanity and compassion.

Gaza now has the highest concentration of child amputees in the world, according to the United Nations. Thousands of children have suffered life-changing injuries, while medical and rehabilitation services have been devastated.

More than 900 wheelchairs donated for children in Gaza have reportedly been prevented from entering. A wheelchair is not a weapon. It cannot threaten Israel or harm anyone. It simply enables a wounded child to move.

Jewish scripture itself teaches a powerful moral principle: “A child shall not suffer for the iniquity of a parent.” It also teaches that each person is accountable for their own actions.

Have the lessons of the Holocaust been forgotten? Jewish children once suffered because innocent human beings were stripped of their humanity. No child, Jewish or Palestinian, should ever be targeted, dehumanized or treated as expendable.

The reported decision to send U.S. deportees to Equatorial Guinea, a country to which many have no connection, raises profound moral and human rights concerns.

Reports indicate that the United States provided a large payment to Equatorial Guinea to accept these migrants, making this policy even more disturbing.

Ahmed Soliman, an Egyptian asylum seeker, and Samson Birhane, from Eritrea, are among those reportedly subjected to detention and harsh treatment after being sent there.

Sending vulnerable people to a distant country where they have no meaningful connection leaves them exposed to excessive abuse and, potentially, even death.

No amount of money can justify treating human beings as unwanted cargo to be transferred beyond the protection of their own legal systems.

Such cruelty violates the fundamental religious and moral teachings shared by people of all faiths: compassion, mercy, justice and respect for human dignity.

The greatest tragedy is that a nation that claims to uphold human rights could participate in conduct so fundamentally opposed to these values.

Abandoning vulnerable human beings to possible abuse is not merely anti-humanity.

Reuters reports that Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on September 19 killed at least three Palestinians, including BASIR AL-BURSH, son of GAZA Health Ministry Director-General MUNIR AL-BURSH. Reuters reported the deaths based on local health officials, medics and family members.

The Associated Press reports that ISRAELI PRESIDENT ISAAC HERZOG pardoned former soldier ELOR AZARIA, who was convicted of manslaughter for shooting ABDUL FATTAH AL-SHARIF in the head while he lay wounded and unarmed in Hebron in 2016. AP reports that the shooting was captured on cellphone video and that the military’s chief of staff opposed the pardon.

AP also reports that MACKLEMORE was removed from ED SHEERAN’s tour after making pro-Palestinian comments. SHEERAN said the decision was made by the promoter. In Philadelphia, he described what is happening in GAZA as “catastrophic and unjustifiable.”

These events demand serious questions about civilian protection, accountability for lethal force and freedom of expression. Every human life deserves equal protection, credible allegations deserve impartial investigation, and peaceful voices speaking about suffering should not be silenced.

Self-defense cannot be a blank check

Bill Maher is right that Israelis deserve safety and that the Hamas atrocities of October 7 were horrific. But security cannot become a moral license to destroy another people’s homes, freedom and future.

Palestinian suffering did not begin on October 7. In 1948, approximately 750,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes. Decades of occupation, blockade, settlement expansion, displacement and repeated warfare followed. To understand October 7 honestly, we must remember this history without excusing Hamas’s crimes.

Maher should also listen to the moral traditions he so often challenges. The Ten Commandments teach, “You shall not murder” and “You shall not covet.” Jesus taught love of neighbor and blessed the peacemakers. Guru Nanak taught the equality and dignity of humanity. The Prophet Muhammad taught mercy and condemned injustice.

These principles do not belong exclusively to one religion. They belong to humanity.

The question is not whether Israeli or Palestinian lives matter. Both do. The moral test is whether we can defend one people’s security without denying another people’s humanity.

Israelis deserve safety. Palestinians deserve safety, freedom, dignity and a homeland where they can flourish.

That is the minimum demand of conscience.
