The current U.S.–Iran Conflict cannot be understood by starting the Story in 1979. In CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR’s Conversation with GENERAL STANLEY MCCHRYSTAL, the roots of today’s Confrontation are traced back to the disastrous 1953 Intervention in Iran.
In 1953, Iran’s elected Prime Minister MOHAMMAD MOSSADEGH nationalized the Country’s Oil Industry, challenging British Control over Iranian Oil. Britain’s MI6 and the U.S. CIA then collaborated in a Coup that overthrew MOSSADEGH and strengthened the Power of SHAH MOHAMMAD REZA PAHLAVI.
The SHAH became a close U.S. Ally, but his Authoritarian Government suppressed Political Opposition. SAVAK became a symbol of Repression. Decades of Authoritarian Rule, Inequality and Resentment over Foreign Interference helped create the Conditions that eventually produced the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
