The conversation between former Israeli Knesset member Colette Avital and Christiane Amanpour should concern everyone who cares about Israel, Palestine and the future of the Middle East.
Avital’s message is difficult to ignore: Israel cannot achieve lasting security through endless war, military force and the denial of Palestinian rights. Security requires a political solution that recognizes the humanity, dignity and legitimate aspirations of Palestinians.
The continuing devastation in Gaza cannot simply be dismissed as an unavoidable consequence of war. The world must demand accountability, humanitarian access and an end to policies that deepen suffering and make peace increasingly impossible.
The United States also has a responsibility. American support should not mean unconditional support for any Israeli government or military policy. Washington must use its considerable influence to demand respect for international law, protection of civilians and a credible path toward Palestinian self-determination.
As Avital’s perspective makes clear, criticizing government policy is not hatred of Israel or antisemitism. It is a necessary part of democratic debate.
Israelis and Palestinians deserve something better than perpetual war. They deserve security, freedom, dignity and peace.
The question is whether political leaders have the courage to choose that path.
A good start would be to end the occupation , create a Palestinian state—and end the torture of Palestinians in Israeli prisons.
